Medicine in need was listed in Time Magazine as one of the “10 start-ups that will change your life”.   We are running this story as MEND has a talent team in South Africa driving its innovation.

Medicine in Need is a not-for-profit research organization devoted to the successful development and manufacture of affordable and effective vaccines and therapies with characteristics that allow their widespread use despite the daunting economic and logistical constraints of the developing world.

Today, they are focused on solutions for Tuberculosis, Malaria and HIV/AIDS, through the work of two independent divisions:

MEND Biotechnology Development

This division maintains a  wet-lab expertise in Boston and Pretoria (where a GLP-qualified and ISO9001 suite is located), as well as deep pharmaceutical line-function expertise, to ensure that discovery molecules can be transitioned into commercial products. MEND Biotechnology Development applies advanced formulations and alternate route of administration technologies to improve overall sustainability and “developability.” We generate fully-integrated development plans to ensure a “clear line of site” from research to commercialization. We work with our own proprietary platform, as well as conduct feasibility and preclinical studies for others’ licensed intellectual property.

MEND Innovation & Translational Alliance Management Division (MITAM)

This division manages a dynamic network of international technology and formulation leaders to allow the most appropriate and cutting-edge solutions to be accessed and applied to the most intractable problems in vaccine and drug development for diseases of poverty. MEND’s primary mission with respect to innovation and translation is to provide a forum where solutions to the pharmaceutical needs of diseases of poverty can be addressed in an appropriate manner from simple formulation strategies to promising advanced technologies with the intention that products are developed rapidly for commercialization and to benefit under served patient populations.

“MEND’s commitment to the areas we are trying to impact means we are building our base right in those locations -our manufacturing plant and office is located in Pretoria, South Africa. Our team is exceptionally well-positioned and capable because of their own direct experiences and passion to find meaningful solutions.”

MEND was selected as a technology pioneer 2011 by the World Economic Forum. The identification of the Technology Pioneer companies is the result of a vigorous selection process, for which the Forum received more than 330 applications from around the world, and that were evaluated by 68 global technology experts. This year, the Forum received the widest range ever of country of origin, with 13 countries represented. MEND is honored to be one of five companies chosen in the field of health.
