MedAfrica was on 22nd May 2012 awarded first prize in the Company Category of 2012 Ericsson Application Awards with a prize money of 15,000 Euro (Kshs 1.6 Million). The Ericsson Application Awards is an annual, global competition for application developers on the Android platform. They were shortlisted as a finalist in the category together with Nabda Care from Egypt. The MedAfrica team was represented by Jackie Akai, Caroline Ngugi and Steve Mutinda at the Awards Ceremony held at Ericsson Headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden.
The jurys criteria for the award winning application was based on the teams’ presentation on; market viability, technology for good assessment, a hit factor, financial sustainability and the market strategy. MedAfrica’s pitch was strongly aligned to this and the jury had this to say; “For the potential to bring important information to many people and give them the power and knowledge to take better care of their communities.” More news from the competition can be found here.
MedAfrica is a Medical Services Content Platform that seeks to create health awareness among consumers from the comfort of their mobile phones. It also seeks to increase interactions and purposeful engagements between health practitioners and consumers of their services, according to Steve Mutinda, CEO of Shimba Technology, the company behind MedAfrica.
Overall Winner of Pivot 25 Competition in 2011
In 2011, MedAfrica (which was then called MedKenya) was the winner in the Mobile Health Category and the overall winner of the Pivot25 held last Year. As a prize for the overall winner, Shimba Technologies Limited went to pitch the application at the Demo conference in Silicon Valley and was recognized by TheNextWeb.com as one of their top 10 favourite start ups from the conference. The team and their application has gone ahead to capture much attention and coverage in both international and local media.
MedAfrica is one of the companies incubated at m:lab East Africa. Over the past one year, MedAfrica has been a success story for both the incubator and the Pivot competition. The team has secured key partnerships for its content gathering strategy as well as other key partners for its content distribution strategy. The platform itself was officially launched from the beta testing phase in November 2011. By March 2012, the app had been downloaded over 70,000 times through existing stores such as Samsung Apps, Nokia, Safaricom and Android Market.
Recently, the application became one of the “hot apps” in the Samsung Apps application store. In general, the application has a growing reach to its intended user base with over 60% of people who download it continuing to use it on an ongoing basis.
According to Steve Mutinda, the teams’ next step is to continue implementing the solution to becoming a household name in Africa with a primary focus on gaining traction in the Kenyan market through creating more partnerships and attaining sustainability.
