Interesting question: does this video of smart agricultural technology from John Deere promise an exciting, more productive, less backbreaking for farming? Or, as Kay McDonald, an agricultural researcher, suggests in her blog Big Picture Agriculture, does it conjure up images of a “cold, dark, soulless” and dystopian production future with no room for small farms, biodynamic or anything remotely back-to-nature-like?

And then there’s a more important question: in light of the growing challenges we’re clearly facing from climate change and a rising global population, will “smart farming” like this help produce the food we need in a future of ever-more-extreme weather, threatened biodiversity, rising food costs and higher energy prices (especially for transport)?
